Varicella

Dr. Colin D'Cunha Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health is again urging all Ontarians to take stringent precautions to avoid contracting Norwalk Virus which has been spreading aggressively throughout southern and eastern Ontario.

Norwalk Virus is not the flu.  Everyone is susceptible and unlike Influenza there is no vaccine.

"Norwalk Virus can be prevented by consistently practicing proper personal hygiene particularly after going to the washroom" said Dr. D'Cunha.  "We know that the virus is active and has spread considerably.  The risk of contracting the Norwalk Virus is still very high and I again urge Ontarians to take the necessary precautions to avoid getting sick."

Symptoms include nausea vomiting diarrhea abdominal cramps headache myalgia malaise and low-grade fever.  Norwalk virus is spread through improper hygiene such as poor hand-washing practices.  It can also be spread by sharing food and utensils with an infected person or by coming in contact with an infected surface such as door handles.  If you think you may be experiencing Norwalk Virus symptoms call Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000 to speak to a Registered Nurse who will help you determine how
to deal with your symptoms.

The best way to prevent the spread of Norwalk Virus is by washing hands thoroughly after each trip to the washroom.  Particular attention should be given to cleaning objects that are frequently handled such as taps door handles knobs banisters toilets and bath rails.

If you are suffering from Norwalk Virus drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration and make sure to wash your hands properly to not infect others.  You are still contagious up to 48 hours after diarrhea stops.

Norwalk Virus is highly contagious and Dr. D'Cunha urges those who are experiencing the symptoms to avoid visiting friends and loved ones in hospitals and long-term care facilities.

"The virus thrives in a closed environment such as hospitals and long-term care facilities" added Dr. D'Cunha.  "Hospital patients and seniors in long-term care facilities are particularly susceptible.  Please do not contribute to the spread of this virus."
