What is this drug used for?

Atropine is most commonly used as an injection to help with an abnormal heart rhythm in the case of a heart attack and as an eye solution to enlarge the pupil for eye examinations. It is also used in combination with other medications to treat symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. It works by relaxing the bowels and decreasing the spasms and pain that are sometimes associated with irritable bowel syndrome. It may rarely be used to improve breathing in people having an acute asthma attack.  

Is there any reason not to take this drug?

You should not take this drug if you are allergic to atropine or other similar medications such as belladonna, hyoscyamine or scopolamine. Since you will only be using this medication in the form of an eye drop, please tell your doctor specifically if you have or have ever had:

  • contact lenses
  • glaucoma
  • problems with vision

What about possible side effects?

When used as an eye drop, the side effects are usually related to the eye. Possible side effects include:

  • blurred vision
  • glaucoma (increase in eye pressure)

What if I am taking other drugs?

Always provide your doctor with a list of all other drugs you are taking (including over-the-counter medications and herbal/natural products) as they may interact with and/or may change the safety or effectiveness of either drug. Tell your doctor specifically if you are taking any of these drugs as he/she may need to make changes:
  • eye medications for glaucoma (this medication can interfere with how well these medications can work)

Other information:

Children: May be used in some situations. Lower doses are required

Seniors: Lower dose necessary.

Pregnancy: As an eye solution, the risk is likely minimal. Talk to your doctor

Women who are nursing: As an eye solution, the risk is likely minimal. Talk to your doctor.

People who drive or operate machinery: Should not do so until they know how this drug affects them personally. May cause blurred vision.

Overdose: Unlikely if used as an eye solution.

Stopping the drug: Do not stop taking this drug without first talking to your doctor as underlying symptoms may recur.

If you miss a dose: No recommendations. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Storage conditions: Closed container; cool, dry location away from excess moisture (not in the bathroom); direct light, always out of reach of children.

Alcohol: No known problems. If you drink, always drink in moderation.
