What is this drug used for?

Clomiphene is used in women to help with ovulation and increase the chance of becoming pregnant. It works by encouraging the hormones that help induce ovulation in women who are having problems producing eggs. It has also been used in males to increase sperm production, in women with menstrual abnormalities, fibrocystic breasts and persistent breast milk production.

Is there any reason not to take this drug?

You should not use this drug if you are allergic to it. It should also be avoided during pregnancy and/or if you have ovarian cysts, active liver disease and/or problems with vaginal bleeding. Before taking this medication, tell your doctor specifically if you have or have ever had:
  • problems with depression
  • fibroids in the uterus
  • breast, ovarian, uterine/endometrial cancer
  • problems with menstruation

What about possible side effects?

At the doses used, side effects are usually mild and tend not to cause people to stop using the medication. Side effects tend to be greater with higher doses and longer-term use. Some side effects include:

  • hot flushes/flashes, sweating, itching
  • stomach pain, bloating (usually occurring premenstrual)
  • changes in vision, blurry vision
Other possible side effects:
  • vaginal bleeding
  • nausea, vomiting
  • breast tenderness
  • feeling dizzy
  • having trouble falling or staying asleep
  • reports of cancer (breast, testicular, ovarian) have occurred; unclear if it is a direct cause and effect or increased growth of a previously, undiagnosed tumour
  • ovarian cysts

What if I am taking other drugs?

Always provide your doctor with a list of all other drugs you are taking (including over-the-counter medications and herbal/natural products) as they may interact with and/or change the safety or effectiveness of either drug.

Other information:

Long term use of this drug is not recommended because of the possibility of visual problems. Your doctor may refer you for eye tests.

Prolonged use may also raise your risk for ovarian cancer.

Multiple pregnancies occur more often in women treated with fertility drugs.

Children: Not prescribed.

Seniors: Not prescribed.

Pregnancy: Not prescribed during pregnancy. If pregnancy occurs while taking the drug, the treatment is stopped.

Women who are nursing: Not recommended.

People who drive or operate machinery: Because of the possibility of eye problems, you should avoid all such activities until you know how the drug affects you personally.

Overdose: An overdose is unlikely to cause a problem. If an overdose is large or you notice any unusual symptoms call your doctor or 911 immediately.

Stopping the drug: Stopping this drug will decrease your chances of becoming pregnant.

If you miss a dose: Take as soon as you remember. If it is very close to your next scheduled dose ask your doctor for advice.

Storage conditions: Closed container; cool, dry location away from excess moisture (not in the bathroom); direct light, always out of reach of children.

Alcohol: You may need to reduce your consumption while you are on this drug. Ask your doctor.

Dietary precautions: None.
