It works by removing the top layer of skin and unblocking the oil glands that helps to keep the skin soft and smooth. It also acts as an antiseptic to decrease bacteria and yeast on the surface of the skin. It is a common ingredient in many over-the-counter soaps gels creams and ointments used in the treatment of acne. Is there any reason not to take this drug?
It is important to disclose your medical history including any pre-existing conditions. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to benzoyl peroxide and if you have or have ever had eczema or a severe sunburn. What about possible side effects?
The most common side effects to this medication are going to be localized to where the medication is being applied. They tend to be worse at the start of therapy and with higher doses. It is best to start with lower doses and increase gradually to decrease chances for having side effects. Side effects include: - dryness redness or mild peeling of skin
- warm feeling on the skin
- slight stinging
- tingling
- bleaching of hair and clothes
Call your doctor immediately if you have any of these less common side effects: - blistering burning severe peeling and swelling of the skin

What if I am taking other drugs?There are few interactions with this medication as it is applied locally to the skin. However when this medication is used with other medications that can cause irritation to the skin it may increase your chances of having this side effect. It is always a good idea to let your pharmacist and doctor know about other medications you are taking. By doing this they can review all your medications and be sure that there are no interactions which could interfere with how well either medication works or that could place you at higher risk for side effects.
Other information:Benzoyl peroxide is for external use only. Do not swallow it and avoid getting it in your eyes nose or mouth. Do not apply dressings bandages cosmetics lotions or other skin medications to the area being treated. Be careful when applying benzoyl peroxide as it can bleach your hair and clothing. You should see some improvement within five days. Sometimes the acne may seem worse before it gets better. If your acne does not improve in four to six weeks see your doctor.
Management of Side Effects: Start with the lowest dose first. If your skin is sensitive to this medication you can start by just leaving the medication on your face for 15 minutes on the first night and then wash up. Gradually double the time on the face until you can leave it overnight and then wash off in the morning. Children: Generally not recommended for children under the age of 12.
Seniors: Not applicable.
Pregnant women: Generally no reason for concern. Talk to your doctor.
Women who are nursing: No reason for concern. Talk to your doctor.
People who drive or operate machinery: May safely do so while using this product.
Alcohol: No reason for concern. If you drink always drink in moderation.
Overdose: Excessive use of benzoyl peroxide may harm your skin. If you notice any swelling or unusual redness or irritation talk to your doctor.
Stopping the drug: This drug is meant to be used as a short-term acne treatment. You can stop using it when you no longer need it. However your acne may return upon stopping.
If you miss a dose: Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However if it is almost time for the next dose skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose. Storage conditions: Closed container; cool dry location away from excess moisture (not in the bathroom); always out of reach of children.
