Halloween and allergies

Halloween treats and costumes can pose potential dangers for children with allergies or asthma. Here are some suggestions to help ensure your child enjoys his or her evening of trick or treating:

  • Insist that your children let you check their candy before they dig in. Pop a few safe snacks into their bags before they go out so they won't be tempted to eat unchecked treats.
  • Don't allow them to eat any treats that don't list the ingredients.
  • Use hypoallergenic grease or face paints especially for kids whose skin is easily irritated.
  • If your children have asthma speak to your doctor about giving them medication before trick-or-treating begins. The excitement of the night cool air and dust could trigger an asthma attack in some children.
