Bisphenol A
BPA is back in the news, and again, scaring people needlessly.
The ubiquitous chemical, Bisphenol A or BPA, has been back in the news recently because the Canadian government has just banned the use of BPA in plastic baby bottles.
The rationale for this ban, and who could argue with this, is that even though there is still lots of debate about the overall safety of BPA, babies and infants are particularly susceptible to anything that can damage the neurological system, so why take the chance that there is any danger at all associated with early use of this chemical?
Interestingly, however, despite a recent highly-hyped study in the Journal of the American Medical Association linking the use of BPA to a doubled risk of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes in some adults, the Canadian government has - as yet - chosen not to ban the use of BPA in products geared specifically to adults, even though, gauging the kind of email I get, a hell of a lot of Canadian adults are very worried about being exposed to this chemical.
I have no idea how toxic BPA will prove to be when we get enough data on it, but I do know one thing: if you're a typical and average Canadian, and you're really worried about not coming down with heart disease and Type 2 diabetes, you'd get a hell of a lot more bang for your worry-buck in warding off those twin devils if you did more exercise and ate a healthier diet than you're gonna get from avoiding the use of plastic containers with BPA in them.
